~~~The Desert Fathers (and Mothers): the origins of Christian Monasticism in Third Century Egypt
This will be an introductory study into the lives of the Desert Fathers (and Mothers) of Third Century Egypt. From them came the origins of Christian Monasticism in the West. Accordingly we will explore the role of asceticism, the God of solitude and simplicity, the spirituality of the desert, the Jesus prayer, the hesychast, the life of virtue and the battling of the demons. It will be an exposure to the foundations of Christian living as witnessed through the Apothegmata Patrum - the sayings of the Desert Fathers that illustrate their lives as lived out even to this day.
~~~Freedom from Fear: a way through the ways of Jesus the Christ
We all have fears, experience guilt and shame, feel anxiety, and have other generally uneasy feelings that tend to disrupt our lives. This course will enter into the sources of these conflicts and suggest that a way to transcend these feelings is by re-encountering the teachings of Jesus, as illustrated in his parables. Accordingly we will deal with five notable parables and see in them the way to climb over the sufferings that all too often curtail the freedom in our lives.
Time & Dates: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Thurs., July 11, 18, 25, August 1, 2019
