~~~Eucharistic Theology: The origin, evolution and meaning of the Mass
On the night Jesus was betrayed he had a final meal with his disciples. At that meal he deviated in three dramatic ways from the Jewish Passover meal. This course will study the origin, the meaning and the evolution of these actions that represent the foundation of Christian worship. It will ask disturbing questions of us who seek to be a Eucharistic people some two thousand years later, in a violent and power oriented Christian world.
Time & Dates: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Mondays -- March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, April 6, 2020
~~~Islam: the founding of the faith of the prophet Muhammad
This will be a brief introductory series of lectures, on the second largest religious faith in the world: Islam. We will study the origins, the call of the Prophet Muhammad and the evolution of the foundational beliefs of Islam. We will use DVD's and VHS's to supplement and bring alive this dynamic faith that asserts belief in the one God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus as its foundational pillar and creed.
Time & Dates: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Tuesdays -- March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, April 7, 2020
~~~The Parables of Jesus
The purpose of this course is to immerse ourselves into a hearing of Jesus’ parables from the perspective of First Century Palestine so that their radical demands for personal change can be heard anew, as if for the first time. The course will study select narrative parables of Jesus in the context of the cultural, societal, economic, political and religious background against which Jesus proclaimed the imminence of the coming of the Kingdom of God.
Time & Dates: 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Wednesdays -- March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 2020
